What to wear for your winter newborn session

If you’ve been around these parts, you know I’m a big believer in helping my clients figure out what to wear for their session so they feel prepared, taken care of, and most importantly, beautiful!

Picking out what to wear for a newborn session can be super stressful because you have no idea what your body is going to be like postpartum (especially if it’s your first baby!) and how you’re going to feel in certain items of clothing only 2-3 weeks after giving birth. I feel ya, mama.

Ever since I had the debacle with my own newborn session, I preach the importance of starting to look for outfits before baby even comes. Yep. It may sound like overkill but trust me when I say the last thing you want to be doing is rushing around the mall three days before your session trying to find something to wear.

Last spring I published a wildly popular post about what to wear for your newborn session if it was in the spring or summer but now that we’re in the winter months, it’s time for a refresh. My tips are still the same as they were for spring and summer outfits but I’ve got some other ideas about what you can wear (and honestly, probably feel really good in).

For mama:

  • Loose-fitting around the chest and waist
  • Flutter sleeves to cover arms
  • Soft pastels and neutral colors
  • Outfit formulas: dress + slouchy cardigan | sweater/tunic and pants (no shame if you’re still in maternity pants!)
  • Something you’d wear again

For dad:

  • A relaxed button down, T-shirt, henley or sweater
  • Light to medium wash jeans
  • Neutral colors to complement mom
  • Outfit formulas: waffle shirt/henley + jeans/jogger | sweater + khakis
  • Something he’d wear again

Dress #1 // Cardigan // Dress #2

Sweater // Jeans

Sweater #1 // Sweater #2 // Pants

Henley // Pants

Tunic #1 // Jeans (non-maternity) // Tunic #2

Waffle crewneck // Joggers
